Posted Sunday, June 04, 2006 by Stamford Advocate
Class M Tourney: Darien 20, Staples 3 -- Cooper MacDonnell scored four goals to move closer to Darien's all-time record for goals as the Blue Wave downed Staples in Class M state tourney opening round action yesterday.

The victory means No. 1 seed Darien (18-1) will face No. 8 seed New Canaan (14-5) Tuesday at Norwalk High School at 7:30 p.m. The contest will count as both a Class M quarterfinal as well as the FCIAC Championship for both teams. Rain postponed the FCIAC title clash twice last week.

MacDonnell, who also collected three assists, now has 163 career goals. He is just three behind Darien's all-time goal scorer Charley Howe (166).

Ashton Hotchkiss finished with five goals and three assists followed by Andrew MacMinnis (three goals), Whit McCarthy (one goal, five assists), Tim Hamernick (two goals, two assists) and Sam Spillane (one goal, two assists) for Darien. Tyler Foley added two goals.

For Staples (9-9), Pat Sullivan, Alex Lebow and B.J. Learner all tallied while Bobby Driesman made 14 saves in net.

For Darien, Chris Madalon (five saves) and Jamison Love (three saves) combined in net.
